Monthly Meals for an Elderly Neighbor

For a year and a half, I visited an elderly man living alone, bringing food and cooking for him every month. The meals mattered, but the relationship mattered even more.

Monthly Meals for an Elderly Neighbor

When I visit, I usually bring side dishes, fruits, healthy drinks, and dessert. At first, I saw these visits mainly as a way to provide him with a home-cooked meal, but over time, our conversations became just as meaningful to me, if not more. He compliments my cooking and shares lessons from his life, and I have come to look forward to these visits as much as he does.

This is the single most important activity that shaped how I think about service. Service is not a one-time project nor is it simply about providing help. It is about being present, building trust, and creating a relationship that grows thorugh consistent care. It is the model I want the rest of my work to follow.
